Group piano lessons are offered for beginners only, ages 6 to 9. Students will be in a class of 4 students who will learn together weekly in an hour-long class. Each student will have a piano or digital piano to play on during class. There are many exciting benefits to learning music in a group, including:
- The social aspect of group lessons fosters a sense of camaraderie in the class and makes a traditionally solitary activity a fun group activity
- Playing for your classmates each week improves performance skills & encourages practice at home
- Learning in a group produces students with a stronger sense of beat and rhythm and improved sight reading and fluency
- The opportunity to make music as an ensemble on a regular basis is incredible – we will be playing music together every single week!
Group lessons will consist of 28 classes throughout the school year plus 4 in the summer. Students will learn: how to read music, including landmark notes on the staff, reading by intervals, counting basic rhythms; they will learn 7 major and minor chords, arpeggios and five-finger scales and will use those chords to harmonize lead sheets; proper technique including how to sit at the piano, proper hand position, playing different articulations, how to play beautifully, etc.; sight reading and practicing skills; ensemble skills and making music as a group; performing solos and performance skills; music listening and appreciation, and more! They will learn at least 30 pieces, including both solo and ensemble recital pieces, and memorize a couple of pieces.
Students in group classes will be expected to practice daily at home a minimum of 5 days per week. Parents should support young students by sitting with them to practice daily and encouraging them in positive ways.
